Excerpt Reveal - Manwhore +1 by Katy Evans

MANWHORE + 1  by Katy Evans

EXCERPT

FOUR WEEKS

I’ve never been so hopeful as when I board the pristine glass elevator at the M4 corporate building. A handful of employees ride along with me, murmuring perfunctory greetings to each other and to me. I think my mouth must be on vacation because I can’t seem to force it to speak. But I smile in reply—my smile nervous, nervous but hopeful, definitely hopeful. My riding companions step out on their floors one by one until I’m alone, riding up to the executive floor on my own.
Toward him.
           Toward the man I love.
My body is raging. My blood is pumping—my blood is storming—my thighs are shaking. My stomach feels filled with little earthquakes that just won’t quit, then they turn into a full-fledged roil when I hear the elevator ting at his floor.
Stepping out, I’m in corporate nirvana, surrounded by sleek chrome and pristine glass, marble and limestone floors. But I hardly have eyes for anything except the tall and imposing frosted glass doors at the far end of the room.
Framing those doors to each side is a pair of sleek designer desks, for a total of four.
Behind these desks are four women in identical black-and-white suits, sitting behind their gleaming dark-oak desks, working quietly behind their flat-screen computers.
One of them, the forty-year-old Catherine H. Ulysses—right hand of the man who owns every inch of this building—stops what she’s doing when she sees me. She arches her brow, then seems both tense and relieved as she lifts the receiver on her desk and murmurs my name into it.
           I. Am. Not. Breathing.
But Catherine doesn’t miss a beat as she motions me toward the huge frosted doors—those intimidating doors—that lead into the lair of the most powerful man in Chicago.
The human being with the most powerful effect on me.
This is what I’ve been waiting for, for four weeks. This is what I wanted when I left a thousand messages on his phones and what I wanted when I wrote a thousand others that I left unsent. To see him.
For him to want to see me.
But as I force myself to step forward, I don’t even know if I’ll have the strength to stand before him and look him in the eye after what I did.
I’m wracked so hard with nervousness and anticipation and hope—yes hope, small but bright, even as I shake like a leaf.
Catherine holds the door open, and I struggle to hold my head high and walk into his office.
Two steps inside I hear the swoosh of the glass door shutting behind me and my systems halt at the familiar sight of the most beautiful office I’ve ever been in.
His office is all vast marble and chrome, twelve-foot ceilings, and endless floor-to-ceiling windows.
And there he is. The center of its axis. The center of my world.
He’s pacing by the window, speaking into a headset in a low, low voice—the kind he uses when he’s pissed. All I can make out are the words have to be dead to let her fall into his clutches …
He hangs up, and as if he feels me in the room, he turns his head. His eyes flare when he sees me. His green eyes.
His achingly familiar, beautiful green eyes.
He inhales, very slowly, his chest expanding, his hands curling a little at his sides as he looks at me.
           I look back at him.
           Malcolm Kyle Preston Logan Saint.
I just walked into the eye of the most powerful storm of my life. No. Not a storm. A hurricane.
Four weeks, I haven’t seen him. And he still looks exactly as I remember. Larger than life, and more irresistible than ever.
His striking face is perfectly shaven today, and his sensual lips look so achingly full I can almost feel them against mine. Six-feet-plus of perfectly controlled male power stand before me, in a perfect black suit and a killer tie. He’s the very devil in Armani; strong-boned, square-jawed, gleaming dark hair and those penetrating eyes.
           He’s got the best eyes.
They twinkle mercilessly when he teases me, and when he doesn’t tease me, they’re mysterious and unreadable, assessing and intelligent, keeping me guessing about his thoughts.
But I had forgotten how cold those eyes used to be. Green arctic ice looks back at me now. Every fleck of ice in those eyes gleaming like diamond shards.
He clenches his jaw and tosses the headset aside.
He looks as approachable as a wall, his shoulders stretching his white shirt, which clings to his skin like a groupie. But I know he’s not a wall; I’ve never wanted to throw myself at a wall like this.
He’s walking towards me. Every step he takes makes my heart pound as he moves with that quiet and confident own-the-world stride of his.
He stops a few feet away and shoves his hands into his pants pockets; and he seems so big all of a sudden, and he smells so utterly good. I drop my eyes to his tie as the little candle of hope I walked in with starts to flicker with doubt.

Review - Breaking Free by Cara Dee

Synopsis
The Hollywood scene has always fit Tennyson Wright like a too-tight sweater. A highly respected director, he has managed to avoid the games and power plays of Tinseltown. Until now. To gain more publicity for the film he's shooting, the studio has decided a PR relationship is in order, and soon Tennyson finds himself pushed into the spotlight with one of the actresses on set. Rich, spoiled, much younger, party princess Sophie Pierce.

Sophie, famous for being infamous, got her part in the film due to her daddy, the studio chairman. But there’s more to her than wild nights and drunken tabloid photos, and she’s aching to prove it. Under Tennyson’s protective wing, she begins to navigate the uncharted territory of responsible adulthood and takes the first steps toward a legitimate, lasting fame based on her talent, not her reputation.

But in order for Sophie to truly soar on her own, she’s going to have to shed every part of her life.

Freedom has a price.

Oh, wow! I don't even know where to start! I loved Breaking Free, so so much! You know how you come across a story, and it stays with you? It makes you re-think about what you've read, if the characters had the right reactions, or if the story overall was satisfactory? That was this book!

Sophie is a typical self-absorbed socialite, that most likely lands up on gossip sites like TMZ and such. She is cast in a film, which her father owns the studio, and gets thrown into a "showmance" with the director. Any press, is good press, right?

Tennyson is older than Sophie and is not pleased with this, but once getting to "know" Sophie, He begins to have a change of heart. Sophie is young and naïve, but as she spends more time with Tennyson, she starts to grow up.

I think the key moment, was when Tennyson and Sophie go to the burger joint together. I felt there was a shift; something good was happening. He told Sophie to eat, and explained what beauty meant to him. I just loved their whole overall chat!

Cara Dee is an amazing writer and puts thought and detail into her work. Breaking Free made me cry and I LOVE THAT! Can't wait to read With Brave Wings in August!

Breaking Free by Cara Dee is "Sexy Read Approved," and I give it my 6-star rating!

= For those books that were extra special for me. Sometimes they moved me emotionally or made me think deeply about a topic.

Sometimes they were beautiful stories. Most of the time they were the books that I need to own and will reread over and over again because I love the characters and story.

About the Author

There aren’t many things better than picking up my Kindle and getting completely sucked into a whole new world—where words morph into images and characters’ moods suddenly reflect my own.
Aside from good plot and writing, for me, it boils down to relatable characters.

As a writer, I’m not finished until the men and women in my books come to life, until I can see them as real people, until I can connect with them. Which means I write what I want to read: everyday heroes and heroines who have the same struggles we all do. They evolve, have flaws, make mistakes and amends, learn, and find the endings they fight for.

Those are the characters who take the readers on a journey away from work, laundry, grocery shopping, and to-do lists.

When I’m not writing, researching, or brainstorming, I’m either planning my next trip (never-ending bucket list!), reading, watching hockey, or spending time with family and friends.

As I stepped into the tub, the hot water made me gasp as I eased down into it slowly. My body was strangely aching and I hoped the heat would ease the muscles and relax me. I leaned my head back and closed my eyes as I let the sensations seep into me. It felt so wonderful.

I wasn't sure how long I lay like that before I heard the card in the door and then someone walk into the room. I smiled thinking of finally being alone with him.

I kept my eyes closed but raised my arm so Cade could take my hand. Mmmm... He brought my fingers to his lips, then brushed them back and forth a couple of times.

"You better be who I think you are," I said softly.

He didn't say anything, but came down on his haunches behind the back of the tub and his warm mouth found the chord in my neck; his hand coming up to cup my opposite cheek, his fingers like warm velvet on my skin, his musky scent surrounding me. Chills ran through me at the touch of his lips on my skin. It was heavenly.

"Mmmmm, you taste so delicious." That sexy voice could make any woman drop her panties, and his thumb brushed across my lower lip. He kissed the corner of my mouth and then moved his lips over mine in a deep searching kiss. I loved the way he tasted, too.

Blog Tour Stop - Northland by Cara Dee

SYNOPSIS

Two years ago, Logan Ward got the surprise of his life when he discovered he was the father of a two-year-old boy. Professionally and romantically adrift, he devoted all his time and energy to caring for his son. But now he’s searching for something more, and he and Justin head north to Alaska to try out the life his best friend Quinn has been raving about.

Kyle Shaw has been living off the land his whole life, comfortable with nature and the challenges of surviving in the Alaskan wilderness. He enjoys his seasonal work at the O’Connor Adventure Retreat and is looking forward to this year’s stint. He’s not in the market for anything more than hard work, good friends, and reasonably priced milk.

The work brought Logan to Alaska, but a late-night encounter with Kyle opens his mind to the possibilities of a future richer than any paycheck.

EXCERPT

"Okay, buckle up, boys." Mitch began bringing the plane down. "We got a bit of a crosswind, so it'll be a rocky landing. Be glad Quinn ain't here."

Kyle brought out his binoculars to check the horizon. It was clear at the moment, but there was definitely a storm brewing. It might even hit earlier.

"Who's that down there?" Logan asked from behind him.

Kyle directed his binoculars and looked down at the runway they were approaching, and he recognized Quinn's blue parka. There was a small figure, too. Justin. He looked like a garden gnome in his green snowsuit and pointy winter hat with flaps to cover his ears.

"Quinn and your kid," he muttered. He saw Quinn pointing toward the plane, and the child jumped and clapped his hands. Kyle's mouth tugged up a bit, and then he refocused on the perimeters.

He hoped Justin would grow up to be less of a douchebag than his dad.

"How good is Quinn with his gun?" Kyle zoomed in to see better. The Retreat's little forest was surrounded by a shrubby, snow-blanketed landscape, and Kyle could see nine or ten creatures edging closer to the forest. It wasn’t caribou, and foxes didn’t move in packs. Had to be wolves.

"Decent," Logan replied. "Why?"

"Decent's not gonna cut it." Kyle stowed away his binoculars and reached for the case that held his old M39 rifle. "Mitch, I need you to bring her down for me."

Mitch knew the area and its dangers, and when someone told him to land, he fucking landed. There was a valid reason, and he didn’t question it.

Logan wasn’t created from the same stock. "Dude, what's wrong?"

"Pack of wolves moving closer." Kyle attached the mag and then got out his short-range .22. Just in case. As the plane touched ground, he swiped up his binoculars again and hoped the pack was only lingering in the background. Unlike what Hollywood made the world believe, wolf attacks on humans were extremely rare. But these shitskept advancing, and they were doing it fast.

Not normal.

"Stop the fucking plane!" Logan snapped at Mitch. "That’s my son out there!"

The plane bounced and skidded along the strip, and then Kyle saw both Kiery and Wolf running out of the forest, and it wasn’t long before Declan appeared, too. He must've sensed something was up because of how their dogs reacted, and now he was trying to get Quinn's attention.

"Come on, come on." Kyle spoke under his breath. Quinn looked back; he must've heard Declan, and only a second later, Quinn brought out his pistol and aimed it toward the approaching wolves.

"They're running in fast," Mitch said grimly.

They were both thinking the same thing, Kyle was sure.

Rabies.

At fucking last, the plane lost enough speed for Kyle to jump out.

"Back off, Quinn!" Declan yelled, ready with his own rifle. "Kiery, halt!"

Kyle let out a sharp whistle as he ran closer, and Wolf positioned himself in front of Quinn and Justin, baring his teeth and growling furiously.

The wolves were some twenty yards away when Kyle threw himself onto the ground to be able to hold his rifle steady. He peered through the scope and took down the male leading the pack, quickly followed by the second. Declan shot another one as the remaining wolves scattered.

"Fuck," Kyle swore. He got off the ground and stalked toward the three dying wolves, and Declan did the same. Behind him, he could hear Logan cursing Alaska and fussing over Justin, which only made Kyle wanna punch him. Alaska wasn’t like any other state. Humans and wildlife lived together—end of fucking story.

"This one's probably infected," Declan sighed. A kill shot to the neck silenced the wolf permanently.

"Yeah." Kyle eyed the animal. Foaming at the mouth was actually uncommon, but this one had it. Slackened jaw, too. Then he walked over to another wolf, and that one looked the same. "Not this one, though." The third didn’t have any outward signs of rabies, though it meant little. Either he'd simply followed his alpha, or he'd been infected later.

"I'll have Pat bag them and tag them and send them off to Fairbanks." Declan pulled out his com device to radio his brother. "Were any shot in the head?"

Kyle shook his head no. If a rabid animal was shot in the head, their brains couldn’t be examined at the lab in Fairbanks. Not that Kyle gave a shit. His mind was going in another direction.

"We have the rest of the pack to worry about now," he told Declan. "I'll head out in an hour. Tell the others to stay indoors."

"The blizzard, Kyle," Declan reminded him.

Kyle just shrugged and started trekking back to the plane where his stuff was. "I've been through worse!" He threw a smirk over his shoulder.

Quinn looked a little shocked, but Kyle had to admit he was adjusting to life in Alaska well.

Logan, on the other hand… He was furious.

"You sure you're okay, baby?" He studied Justin frantically.

"I'm fine," Justin mumbled, scrunching his nose."Why do you look mad, Daddy?"

Good question, Kyle thought. This was life up here.

Everyone should respect the power of the nature here and know the dangers that lurked, but blaming an accident on animals that had been here far longer than humans was goddamn ignorant.

"Motherfucker," Kyle muttered to himself.

He refused to admit his hostility toward Logan was caused by what happened this morning.
